There are a few less of these guys but they have a lot more of the heavily armed and armored Huscarls to oppose the masses of Saxon Fyrd.<br />
<br />

<br />
All together this gives me a little over 800 dark ages figures. My main gaming partner, Trent, can field about this same amount of Vikings and Saxons and he also has a bunch of Welsh/Irish, which allows us to do some very large dark age fights.<br />
<br />
Next up for me is working on more ships, Viking/Saxon baggage stands, and some archer stands.<br />
<br />
I've also got a bunch of painted Rus that need to be rebased to offer another opponent.<br />

Some of these were purchased already painted and some were painted by me but almost all of them have had some touch up work done to them (Rebased, Inked, Shields re-painted). <br />
<br />
First is an overall shot of my Saxons<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/26125290@N07/12005234306/" title="DSC01356 by leidang, on Flickr"><img alt="DSC01356" src="http://farm4.staticflickr.com/3814/12005234306_f5b1a42cfb_n.jpg" height="300" width="400" /></a><br />
<br />
You can see the household troops in the front with the Thegns and Fyrd to the rear.<br />
<br />
The round bases represent the leaders and have been picked out with LBMS flags. <br />
<br />
Here is a closer picture of some of the household troops.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/26125290@N07/12004707453/" title="DSC01359 by leidang, on Flickr"><img alt="DSC01359" src="http://farm3.staticflickr.com/2816/12004707453_f96cb80ded_n.jpg" height="300" width="400" /></a><br />
<br />
The front three untis each with 16 figures represent the well armed and armoured household troops. The stands behind these are the Thegns (12 per unit) they represent the less armored and less well trained warriors. Better than the fyrd but armed with weapon, shield, and helmet.<br />
<br />
Below are my 10 units of Thegns.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/26125290@N07/12004769524/" title="DSC01357 by leidang, on Flickr"><img alt="DSC01357" src="http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7398/12004769524_8500af0541_n.jpg" height="300" width="400" /></a><br />
<br />
Here are the Fyrd (Mostly peasants with a variety of implements as weapons) with no armor. Their leader is a Priest who is proudly standing in front of his charges. They are 12 figures per unit like the Thegns.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/26125290@N07/12004414575/" title="DSC01358 by leidang, on Flickr"><img alt="DSC01358" src="http://farm4.staticflickr.com/3749/12004414575_67c5279c07_n.jpg" height="300" width="400" /></a><br />
<br />
Next is the Bishop with his personal guard of household troops.<br />

<br />
And finally here are some closeups of my command stands. See the previous blog post for an explanation of why I have matching rectangular and round bases.<br />

<br />
That's all of my Saxons for now. Although I am still painting more.<br />
<br />
Next up the Vikings!Leidanghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05501171103402884493noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2978761034420654015.post-37764307147014280432014-01-17T19:35:00.002-08:002014-01-18T10:42:33.677-08:0015mm Basing Method (Vikings and Normans)I thought I would post about the way that I base my ancients, including my Vikings and Saxons. I generally base all infantry on 40mm x 20mm bases with either 2,3, or 4 figures per base. This way I can use them for any rules that use WRG basing standards. However, I also like to use other rules like Impetus and Hail Ceasar which benefit from larger bases. To allow for this I make magnetic movement stands that can fit 4 of my metal stands. This gives me a base that is 80mm x 40mm for infantry.<br />
<br />
The magnetic bases are made using a layer of sheet magnet, a layer of plastic card, and then a layer of rubber steel sheet. I buy these from a magnet wholesaler in large rolls. If you use the 60ml sheeting you can pick up the whole base by a figure and it will support the entire weight of the combined base. I put the magnetic steel on the bottom so I can store them with figures attached in my already magnetized boxes.<br />
<br />
Here you can see a magnetic base with 4 of the metal bases on it.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/26125290@N07/12004303235/" title="DSC01388 by leidang, on Flickr"><img alt="DSC01388" src="http://farm4.staticflickr.com/3745/12004303235_e52f508f5a_n.jpg" height="300" width="400" /></a><br />
<br />
With the bases spreadout:<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/26125290@N07/12004646774/" title="DSC01390 by leidang, on Flickr"><img alt="DSC01390" src="http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7421/12004646774_24d8a1a08f_n.jpg" height="300" width="400" /></a>
<br />
<br />
I then base my leaders on 2 separate but matching stands per leader. 1st a 40mm x 20mm rectangular metal base and the 2nd pn a round washer. I use LBMS flags to signify the leaders as well as painting the 2 stands to match.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/26125290@N07/12004325745/" title="DSC01383 by leidang, on Flickr"><img alt="DSC01383" src="http://farm3.staticflickr.com/2820/12004325745_60d2158424_n.jpg" height="300" width="400" /></a><br />
<br />
Here is a unit of Huscarls with their detached leader.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/26125290@N07/12004642824/" title="DSC01391 by leidang, on Flickr"><img alt="DSC01391" src="http://farm6.staticflickr.com/5518/12004642824_086a4b3969_n.jpg" height="300" width="400" /></a><br />
<br />
When the leader wants to attach to a unit I then remove one of the 4 stands and replace it with the 40mm x 20mm stand. as you see below. With this method I can also show a leader attached and leading from the front, or attached and driving troops forward from the rear. Its a little more work to do the extra stands but I like the look.<br />
<br />

<br />
I'll be posting some pics of all of the Vikings and Saxons I have done in the next few days.<br />
<br />Leidanghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05501171103402884493noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2978761034420654015.post-76828942075356705042014-01-14T23:03:00.000-08:002014-01-15T10:49:14.509-08:0015mm Viking ShipsOver the past few months I have been working on building some 15mm Viking ships and casting them with the help of one of my good friends. I've got three different ship hulls cast and have finally completed a few of the ships. I thought I would post a few pictures of them to my blog.<br />
<br />
The reason I decided to build these ships was that all of the other "15mm" Viking ships I could find were specifically under-scaled. Meant to be used as baggage camps. I wanted ships that could actually fit my 15mm Vikings which were based on 40mm x 20mm bases. and would allow me to fight see battles. I did some research on the lengths of actual Viking ships and all of my ships are within the appropriate length of actual recovered Viking vessels. They are a little oversized in their width due to my requirement to fit my bases. <br />
<br />
Also I should note that I did not sculpt the obligatory shields onto the side of the ships since in my case the figures themselves are holding their shields. It is also my understanding that the shields were only hung on the ship sides on formal occasions (Leaving/returning from home port) or possibly when braving bowfire. Otherwise they would either be stored away to preserve them from the corrosive properties of salt water and spray, perhaps in seal skin, or in use in the event of shipboard fighting.<br />
<br />
Here is a picture of the 4 ships I currently have completed. (Note that I only have 1 sail finished at this time). The sail is attached with a magnet so it can easily be removed. The front ship is my large longship that holds 9 stands, the ship with the sail is the medium longship that holds 7 stands and the other 2 ships are small longships that hold 5 stands.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/26125290@N07/11958067923/" title="DSC01353 by leidang, on Flickr"><img alt="DSC01353" height="300" src="http://farm6.staticflickr.com/5494/11958067923_b624d7ffd2_n.jpg" width="400" /></a><br />
<br />
I built the masters for these using Balsa wood and textured plasti-card for the sides. With the help of one of my gaming friends (Thanks Trent!) we got molds of the hulls made. This next picture shows cast samples of the small and medium hulls fresh out of the mold.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/26125290@N07/11957797895/" title="DSC01347 by leidang, on Flickr"><img alt="DSC01347" height="300" src="http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7428/11957797895_666a8972f5_n.jpg" width="400" /></a><br />
<br />
I then finished the ships by sculpting tail pieces out of greenstuff and adding heads from other minitures (Note the dragon heads are from the plastic toy dragons that come in a tube). I then added masts and some simple rigging to finish the basic models.<br />
<br />
The sail was printed on thin card with a computer printer (By yet another friend - Thanks Conrad!) and then wrapped around another dowel, glued together, and shaped. The head of a brad and a rare earth magnet allow the sail to me removed or added as needed. Our next step will be to make and cast some oar pieces that can be set next to the models to indicate they are being rowed.<br />
<br />
Here are some additional pictures<br />

Relative sizes of known viking ships & my models:<br />
<br />
<b>My Large Model</b> = 37 Meters (15mm scale)<br />
Skuldelev 6 Ship = 36 Meters<br />
Skuldelev 2 Ship = 30 Meters<br />
<b>My Med Model</b> = 31.5 Meters (15mm Scale)<br />
Sutton Hoo Ship = 27 Meters<br />
<b>My Small Model</b> = 26.5 Meters (15mm Scale)<br />
Gokstad Ship = 23 Meters<br />
Tune Ship = 22 Meters<br />
Oseberg Ship = 21 Meters<br />
<b>My unfinished very small Model </b>= 21 Meters<br />
Skuldelev 5 Ship = 17 Meters<br />
Skuldelev 1 Ship = 16 Meters (Knarr)<br />
Skuldelev 3 Ship = 14 Meters (Knarr)<br />
<br />
I've also got the hull for a small knarr or fishing vessel already cast and am working on a large knarr and one more longship slightly shorter and narrower than the small one above. It will hold 4 stands.<br />
<br />
Anyway I'll be posting some more pics of my Viking project as I get things done. Thanks for taking a look.<br />

I also wanted them to be able to swival to face any direction to properly represent the action. After some experimentation, I finally figured out a good way to make movable gunners for both my Humvees and my Somali technicals. Thought I would do a little blog writeup on how I went about it.<br /><br /><strong>Humvee gunners:</strong><br />First of all I am using QRF Humvee's. I'm sure this method won't work for all 15mm humvee's but it will work for any humvees with a the top hatch molded as an open round hole.<br /><br />Step 1: Build Humvee<br />Step 2: Find a dowel slightly smaller than the gunners hatch hole for your humvee\<br />Step 3: Use green stuff to make a flat surface inside the humvee: I did this by putting a small ball of greenstuff on the end of the dowel and inserting it thorugh the top of the humvee and pressing down. you want this to be level and ready to act as a good base for your gunner.<br />Step 4: Cut pireces of your dowel that when sitting in the top of the humvee will be flush with the humvee top.<br />Step 5: Attach gunner torso to dowel piece<br /><br />Making gunners: Here are the piec4es I used to make my gunners. Obviously, you can use what you like.<br /><strong>50 Cal Gunners</strong> - Old Glory Tank Commander torso manning 50 cal, Peter Pig modern Head with goggles<br /><strong>Mk 19 Gunner</strong> - Same as above I just customized the 50 to look like a MK 19<br /><strong>M240/M60</strong> - Peter Pig Vietnam helicopter crew gunner, Peter Pig modern Head with Goggles<br /><br /><br /><div align="center"><strong>Humvee Gunners</strong> </div><p align="center"><strong><a title="Humvee Gunners 1 by leidang, on Flickr" href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/26125290@N07/5132840657/"><img alt="Humvee Gunners 1" src="http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1190/5132840657_977267caaf.jpg" width="500" height="375" /></a></strong></p><p align="center"><strong></strong></p><p align="center"><strong></strong></p><p align="center"><strong></strong></p><p align="center"><strong></strong></p><p align="center"><strong>Humvee Gunners Removed</strong><br /></p><br /><br /><br /><p align="center"><a title="Humvee Gunners 2 by leidang, on Flickr" href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/26125290@N07/5132842221/"><img alt="Humvee Gunners 2" src="http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4001/5132842221_5d1b249d45.jpg" width="500" height="375" /></a></p><div align="center"><strong>Gunner Facing Away</strong><br /></div><br /><br /><br /><p align="center"><a title="50 Cal Gunner by leidang, on Flickr" href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/26125290@N07/5133445460/"><img alt="50 Cal Gunner" src="http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1357/5133445460_73e96fee36.jpg" width="500" height="375" /></a></p><div align="center"><strong>Humvee Gunner Closeup</strong> </div><br /><br /><br /><p align="center"><a title="Gunner Detail by leidang, on Flickr" href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/26125290@N07/5132845197/"><img alt="Gunner Detail" src="http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1074/5132845197_f1acf7f29d.jpg" width="500" height="375" /></a></p><br /><br /><br /><p align="center"></p><strong>Somali Technical Gunners:</strong><br />For the Somali's I wanted the same sort of thing but obviously couldn't use the dowel trick since the gunners are exposed in the back of pickups, land rovers, or jeeps.<br /><br />Instead I decided to use rare earth magnets. These I countersank into the vehicle models now I just needed a way to build a gunner so that he could attach to the magnet.<br /><br />I once again went back to the Old Glory US Tank Commander figure manning the 50 Cal. I removed the head of this figure and added a head and legs from some Peter Pig Crew figures. The legs I used were from the mortar crewman holding his ears since they were close together and in a standing position. This gave me a standing gunner firing a 50 cal machine gun.<br /><br />I then removed the post from the bottom of the machine gun and replaced it with a cut off nail of the appropriate length. Done right this has the gunner figure standing on the head ot the nail with the shaft of the nail now acting as the machine gun mount.<br /><br />The head of the nail is perfect for attachment to the rare earth magnet and allows the gunners to be removed and or pivoted in whatever direction you like. Although all of my gunners currently have the 50 cal I will be turning some of them into DSHK machine guns by customizing the 50 cals.<br /><br /><p align="center"><strong>Technicals</strong><br /></p><br /><br /><br /><p align="center"><a title="Technicals 1 by leidang, on Flickr" href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/26125290@N07/5132846757/"><img alt="Technicals 1" src="http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1128/5132846757_95b9fd3535.jpg" width="500" height="375" /></a><br /></p><br /><br /><br /><p align="center"><a title="Technicals 2 by leidang, on Flickr" href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/26125290@N07/5133450128/"><img alt="Technicals 2" src="http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1225/5133450128_66695b0b9b.jpg" width="500" height="375" /></a></p><div align="center"><strong>3 Technicals with gunners</strong></div><br /><br /><br /><p align="center"><a title="Technicals 3 by leidang, on Flickr" href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/26125290@N07/5132849985/"><img alt="Technicals 3" src="http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4006/5132849985_ca1dcd11ae.jpg" width="500" height="375" /></a></p><div align="center"><strong>Technicals Gunners removed<br /></div></strong><br /><br /><br /><p align="center"><a title="Technical Gunners removed by leidang, on Flickr" href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/26125290@N07/5132851511/"><img alt="Technical Gunners removed" src="http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1394/5132851511_65b2e8d277.jpg" width="500" height="375" /></a></p><div align="center"><strong>Gunner Detail</strong> </div><div align="center"></div><div align="center">I left the nail on this gunner unpainted so that you could see how it was positioned.</div><p align="center"><a title="Technical Gunner detail by leidang, on Flickr" href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/26125290@N07/5133440908/"><img alt="Technical Gunner detail" src="http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1309/5133440908_e4f8f646e0.jpg" width="500" height="375" /></a></p><p align="left">I may try something similar to this for recoiless rifles and other light vehicle weapons.</p><p align="left"></p>Leidanghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05501171103402884493noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2978761034420654015.post-44918939668333548002010-02-25T16:46:00.000-08:002010-02-25T17:13:14.861-08:00My 15mm Barbarians<div align="left"><br />It took me a couple days but I finally got pictures of my Barbarians. I say Barbarians because I use these as Gauls, Early Germans, and Celts. I am currently in the process of painting up Dacian Falxmen and Sarmatian Cataphracts so that I can press them into service as the bulk of those armies as well. I know there are differences in shields and dress between all of these armies but the living with the inconsistancies is a nice tradeoff from having to paint or acquire several hundred more figures.</div><div align="left"> </div><div align="left">As with my Romans I acquired most of these figures over the course of the past few years. Mostly off of E-bay but I also got a few from Hind's Figures LTD, Dragon painting service, and George Knapp when he was at a KC con a few years ago. All of them have since been rebased, touched up (Some alot more than others), and inked to my liking. </div><div align="left"> </div><div align="left">I have quite a few more skirmishers (particularly for the Celts) but I was running out of room on the table so I left them off.</div><div align="left"> </div><div align="left">This army will be hitting the table, along with their foes the Romans, at Fields of Honor - Spring the weekend of March 27th in Des Moines, IA as well as Sunday at Little Wars at the end of April. If you are in attendance you can check them out in person or better yet command some of them.</div><div align="center"><br /><br /><strong>Gallic Army<br /></div></strong><strong></strong><a href="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/2708/4388002451_3624eefde7_b.jpg"><img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 400px; DISPLAY: block; CURSOR: hand" border="0" alt="" src="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/2708/4388002451_3624eefde7_b.jpg" /> <p align="center"></a><br /><br /><strong>Angled View of Gauls<br /></strong><a href="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/4060/4388001959_fe18e4acce_b.jpg"><img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 400px; DISPLAY: block; CURSOR: hand" border="0" alt="" src="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/4060/4388001959_fe18e4acce_b.jpg" /> </p><p align="center"></a><br /><strong>Warbands<br /></strong><a href="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/2693/4388768810_1c860afa12_b.jpg"><img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 400px; DISPLAY: block; CURSOR: hand" border="0" alt="" src="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/2693/4388768810_1c860afa12_b.jpg" /> </p><p align="center"></a><br /><br /><strong>Warband Closeup<br /></p><br /></strong><a href="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/2694/4388769788_8c1f66d809_b.jpg"><img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 400px; DISPLAY: block; CURSOR: hand" border="0" alt="" src="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/2694/4388769788_8c1f66d809_b.jpg" /> <p align="center"></a><br /><br /><strong>Skirmishers and Elite Warband<br /></p><br /></strong><a href="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/4004/4388770310_4429d0f00f_b.jpg"><img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 400px; DISPLAY: block; CURSOR: hand" border="0" alt="" src="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/4004/4388770310_4429d0f00f_b.jpg" /> <p align="center"></a><br /><br /><strong>More Skirmishers<br /></p><br /></strong><a href="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/4035/4388004387_644536fcf3_b.jpg"><img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 400px; DISPLAY: block; CURSOR: hand" border="0" alt="" src="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/4035/4388004387_644536fcf3_b.jpg" /> <p align="center"></a><br /><br /><strong>Gallic Cavalry<br /></p><br /></strong><a href="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/2756/4388769348_72d638c66f_b.jpg"><img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 400px; DISPLAY: block; CURSOR: hand" border="0" alt="" src="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/2756/4388769348_72d638c66f_b.jpg" /> <p align="center"></a><br /><br /><strong>Cavalry and Light Horse<br /></p><br /></strong><a href="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/2737/4388003365_caea1f6c0d_b.jpg"><img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 400px; DISPLAY: block; CURSOR: hand" border="0" alt="" src="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/2737/4388003365_caea1f6c0d_b.jpg" /> <p align="center"></a><br /><br /><strong>Chariots and Light Horse<br /></p><br /></strong><a href="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/4018/4388002913_835ed1fc6c_b.jpg"><img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 400px; DISPLAY: block; CURSOR: hand" border="0" alt="" src="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/4018/4388002913_835ed1fc6c_b.jpg" /> </a><p align="left"><br />Thanks for taking a look. Many of the figures I bought already painted off e-bay from seller Bobbn867. He sells 15mm figs in lots of 48 foot. I collected these figures over time buying 1 or 2 lots whenever I had the money. During the same period I also bought several pre-painted collections of "Barbarians" Celts, Germans, Gauls, off of E-bay from various sellers. I sort of just packed them away, worked on other projects and waited for the day when I would have enough to do a couple of large armies.<br /><br />About 9 months ago I finally decided to get them out, Base them to my standards and pretty up the paint jobs. Most of the figs got small touch ups, shield rims painted, and an inkwash. I based them for DBM/DBA on metal bases and then created magnetic trays to group them for rulesets such as Impetus, Vis Bellica, Armati and FOG. <br /><br />I also had to paint all of the light troops and the commanders from bare metal. So far they have only seen a handful of battles but they will be seeing the tabletop at Fields of Honor in Des Moines, IA on the weekend of March 27th, if you are in the area stop by and help push them around the table.<br /><br />I'll be posting pics of my Barbarians in the near future.<br /><br /></div><div align="center"><br /><strong>2 Legions Ready for review<br /></div></strong><a href="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/4040/4376512637_ae477f487f_b.jpg"><img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 400px; DISPLAY: block; CURSOR: hand" border="0" alt="" src="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/4040/4376512637_ae477f487f_b.jpg" /> <p align="center"></a><br /><br /><strong>Legions with Marching Camp</strong><br /><a href="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/4008/4376507223_c0ff9e68ae_b.jpg"><img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 400px; DISPLAY: block; CURSOR: hand" border="0" alt="" src="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/4008/4376507223_c0ff9e68ae_b.jpg" /></p><p align="center"></a><br /><br /><strong>A Closer View</strong><br /><a href="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/2742/4376506195_83fa41e5a9_b.jpg"><img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 400px; DISPLAY: block; CURSOR: hand" border="0" alt="" src="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/2742/4376506195_83fa41e5a9_b.jpg" /></p><p align="center"></a><br /><br /><strong>From the Other Direction</strong><a href="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/4050/4376513605_9e1ac3a654_b.jpg"></p><p align="center"><img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 400px; DISPLAY: block; CURSOR: hand" border="0" alt="" src="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/4050/4376513605_9e1ac3a654_b.jpg" /></a><br /><br /><strong>Reviewing the Troops</strong><br /><a href="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/2743/4377256728_fd52fd3610_b.jpg"><img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 400px; DISPLAY: block; CURSOR: hand" border="0" alt="" src="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/2743/4377256728_fd52fd3610_b.jpg" /></a><br /><br /><strong>Coho</strong><a href="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/4045/4376511717_cf32855eab_b.jpg"></a><strong>rt up close<br /></strong><a href="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/4045/4376511717_cf32855eab_b.jpg"><img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 400px; DISPLAY: block; CURSOR: hand" border="0" alt="" src="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/4045/4376511717_cf32855eab_b.jpg" /></a><br /><br /><strong>Archers, Cavalry, and Psiloi</strong><br /><a href="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/4056/4377258492_9dbdfa9cb1_b.jpg"><img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 400px; DISPLAY: block; CURSOR: hand" border="0" alt="" src="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/4056/4377258492_9dbdfa9cb1_b.jpg" /></a><br /><br /><br /><strong>Scorpions, Cavalry, & Psiloi</strong><br /><a href="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/2800/4377257576_04aceb9b9f_b.jpg"><img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 400px; DISPLAY: block; CURSOR: hand" border="0" alt="" src="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/2800/4377257576_04aceb9b9f_b.jpg" /></a><br /><br /><strong>Marching Camp</strong></p><strong></strong><p align="center">(Tents by Baueda)<a href="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/2691/4377255794_d2d9b43e46_b.jpg"><img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 400px; DISPLAY: block; CURSOR: hand" border="0" alt="" src="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/2691/4377255794_d2d9b43e46_b.jpg" /></a> </p>Leidanghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05501171103402884493noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2978761034420654015.post-23897792611516800162010-01-25T16:07:00.000-08:002010-01-25T16:50:07.081-08:0028mm Gladiator ArenaWell after several months of not putting anything out here I finally got my camera squared away and decided to get back at it.<br /><br />I've uploaded some pictures of my 28mm Gladiator Arena and thought I would give a little tutorial on how to build one.<br /><br /><br /><a href="http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4011/4304520413_abff937ace_b.jpg"><img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 400px; DISPLAY: block; CURSOR: hand" border="0" alt="" src="http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4011/4304520413_abff937ace_b.jpg" /></a><br /><br />I decided to focus on the arena itself and too ignore the crowd. I really only cared about the gaming area itself and didn't want <span id="SPELLING_ERROR_0" class="blsp-spelling-error">alot</span> of scenery to get in the way of playing. I wanted the arena to be easily portable. I also had already written my rules and did not need hexes. However, I will address adding hexes below in the instructions in case you want to use them.<br /><br /><br /><br />The design I eventually settled on was a box with the arena inset into it, sort of like a drawer. By adding a handle to one side I made it easy to carry just like a suitcase.<br /><br /><br /><br />Materials needed:<br /><br /><ul><br /><li>4 pieces of bass wood (24" x 3" x 3/8")</li><br /><li>2 pieces of <span id="SPELLING_ERROR_1" class="blsp-spelling-error">masonite</span> (24" x 24" x 1/8")</li><br /><li>16 small wooden blocks</li><br /><li>Enough sheets of <span id="SPELLING_ERROR_2" class="blsp-spelling-error">palstruct</span> stone effects to create the walls </li><br /><li>4 HO scale model railroad tunnel entrances</li><br /><li>1 pack of O scale plastic "Wrought Iron" fencing</li><br /><li>Small pack of 3/4" long screws</li><br /><li>White Glue</li><br /><li>Fine Model Railroad Ballast (For Sand on arena floor) or</li><br /><li>Tan Hex mat for arena floor</li></ul><br /><p>To start off determine the size of the arena you want to create. With a 2 x 2 <span id="SPELLING_ERROR_3" class="blsp-spelling-error">box</span> I went with a 22" diameter circle. Scribe this size circle (Centered) on both of the pieces of <span id="SPELLING_ERROR_4" class="blsp-spelling-error">masonite</span>. Cut the circle out of the piece of <span id="SPELLING_ERROR_5" class="blsp-spelling-error">masonite</span> that will be on the top.</p><br /><p>Cut two of the pieces of basswood down by 3/4 of an inch. This will allow you to assemble the four pieces of basswood into a frame that will act as the sides of the arena box. Now attach the 2 pieces of <span id="SPELLING_ERROR_6" class="blsp-spelling-error">masonite</span> to each side of the basswood frame. Make sure the scribed <span id="SPELLING_ERROR_7" class="blsp-spelling-error">circle</span> on the bottom piece is facing into the box (Toward the top of the box). This inner scribed circle will allow you to position the 16 support blocks along the outer edges of the circle. These will act as support for the <span id="SPELLING_ERROR_8" class="blsp-spelling-error">Plastruct</span> rock walls. Make sure that you do not position any of these in spaces where you want to put your <span id="SPELLING_ERROR_9" class="blsp-spelling-error">arena</span> entrances.</p><br /><p>I used hot glue to position these support blocks but you could use small screws or some other glue if you wish.</p><br /><p>You should now have a shell that is ready to support your arena walls.</p><br /><p>Use the <span id="SPELLING_ERROR_10" class="blsp-spelling-error">plastruct</span> plastic sheet of your choice to get the rock walls you want. Alternately, you could do something more ornate if you like. Make sure you plan for where you wish to put your entrances and cut openings of appropriate size for the tunnel entrances you have purchased.</p><br /><p>Before you attach your tunnel entrances cut appropriate sized pieces of wrought iron fence and glue to the back of your tunnel entrances. These can be in whatever position you prefer. Down or up. I used plenty of white glue for the flocking to make sure it was durable.</p><br /><p>If you prefer to have hexes in the bottom of your arena I would glue a hex mat down to the bottom piece of <span id="SPELLING_ERROR_11" class="blsp-spelling-error">masonite</span> before scribing your circles.</p><br /><p>I also finished my arena off by gluing down some black felt over the top of the box around the arena opening.</p><br /><p></p><br /><p></p><br /><p>Hopefully this gives you some idea of how I built my arena. </p><p> </p><p align="center">Large Entrance<br /><br /></p><p><a href="http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4040/4305263692_2aaa2b2d3a_b.jpg"><img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 400px; DISPLAY: block; CURSOR: hand" border="0" alt="" src="http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4040/4305263692_2aaa2b2d3a_b.jpg" /></a> </p><p align="center">Small Entrance<br /><br /></p><p align="center"><a href="http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4018/4304518783_a7ae620bed_b.jpg"><img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 400px; DISPLAY: block; CURSOR: hand" border="0" alt="" src="http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4018/4304518783_a7ae620bed_b.jpg" /></a><br />Corner Construction</p><p align="center"><br /><a href="http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4049/4304516181_00effbfba9_b.jpg"><img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 400px; DISPLAY: block; CURSOR: hand" border="0" alt="" src="http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4049/4304516181_00effbfba9_b.jpg" /></a> </p><p align="center">The Arena in Action<br /><br /></p><p><a href="http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4064/4305261818_eaf766e8eb_b.jpg"><img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 400px; DISPLAY: block; CURSOR: hand" border="0" alt="" src="http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4064/4305261818_eaf766e8eb_b.jpg" /></a><br /><br /><a href="http://farm5.static.flickr.com/2781/4304515237_6b9fdd50b4_b.jpg"><img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 400px; DISPLAY: block; CURSOR: hand" border="0" alt="" src="http://farm5.static.flickr.com/2781/4304515237_6b9fdd50b4_b.jpg" /></a><br /><br /><a href="http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4052/4304514425_f9588e114c_b.jpg"><img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 400px; DISPLAY: block; CURSOR: hand" border="0" alt="" src="http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4052/4304514425_f9588e114c_b.jpg" /></a><br /><br /><a href="http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4040/4305264200_3678c46a2c_b.jpg"><img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 400px; DISPLAY: block; CURSOR: hand" border="0" alt="" src="http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4040/4305264200_3678c46a2c_b.jpg" /></a><br /><br /><a href="http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4059/4305262314_9524f5f496_b.jpg"><img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 400px; DISPLAY: block; CURSOR: hand" border="0" alt="" src="http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4059/4305262314_9524f5f496_b.jpg" /></a> </p><p>Thanks for taking a look!</p>Leidanghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05501171103402884493noreply@blogger.com6tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2978761034420654015.post-67515735497954935422009-02-08T15:56:00.000-08:002009-02-08T16:38:33.925-08:0028mm 13th Warrior Project<div align="left">A while ago I decided to put together a 13th warrior game focusing on the nighttime battle for the village. I went for a combination of the fight in the book "Eaters of the Dead" and from the movie. For the Vendol I used a combination of Mark Coppestone's cavemen and the Bear & Wolf clad Berzerkers from Foundry.<br /><br />The Northmen were pretty easy I just used Vikings from Foundry. For Fadlan I combined GW mounted saracen torso with foundry viking legs. The villagers are a combination of Gripping Beast, Black Tree, and Dwarf Wars figures.<br /></div><div align="left">For rules I used a very slightly modified version of GW's LOTR system. It works great for medieval skirmish and gave an excellent feel to the game. I've run the scenario at a few conventions and it has been really well balanced. </div><div align="left"><br />The following pictures show several views of these figs. </div><div align="left"> </div><div align="left">The Thirteen<br /><a href="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/196/3264702526_8591c630e0_b.jpg"><img style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 400px; CURSOR: hand; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/196/3264702526_8591c630e0_b.jpg" border="0" /></a><br /><br /><a href="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/246/3263878461_df4b6a0e77_b.jpg"><img style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 400px; CURSOR: hand; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/246/3263878461_df4b6a0e77_b.jpg" border="0" /></a><br /><br /><a href="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3118/3263881251_3ccf5a6bf4_b.jpg"><img style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 400px; CURSOR: hand; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3118/3263881251_3ccf5a6bf4_b.jpg" border="0" /></a><br /><br /><a href="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/197/3264710818_d0980328a5_b.jpg"><img style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 400px; CURSOR: hand; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/197/3264710818_d0980328a5_b.jpg" border="0" /></a><br /><br /><a href="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3447/3264653512_0e44aaf139_b.jpg"><img style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 400px; CURSOR: hand; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3447/3264653512_0e44aaf139_b.jpg" border="0" /></a><br /><br /><a href="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/194/3264722352_2085745c75_b.jpg"><img style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 400px; CURSOR: hand; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/194/3264722352_2085745c75_b.jpg" border="0" /></a><br /><br /><a href="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3451/3264658478_d183bdfb7f_b.jpg"><img style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 400px; CURSOR: hand; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3451/3264658478_d183bdfb7f_b.jpg" border="0" /></a><br />The Villagers<br /><br /><a href="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/240/3264661124_7394afd600_b.jpg"><img style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 400px; CURSOR: hand; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/240/3264661124_7394afd600_b.jpg" border="0" /></a><br /><br /><a href="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/192/3264671464_67710cb8de_b.jpg"><img style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 400px; CURSOR: hand; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/192/3264671464_67710cb8de_b.jpg" border="0" /></a><br /><br />I wanted the Vendol to look dirty and filth encrusted like they did in the movies. I achieved this by using a mixture of black, brown, grey, and red as the base color for the flesh. I then drybrushed a flesh tone over this. After several attempts and some advice from guys on TMP I finally have a finished product. I ended up using 4 Pieces of blue water effects styrene from Plastruct and one sheet of plain white styrene. I made the insert look the same from both sides so, starting from the front I have a layer of wavy blue water, a layer of bubbly blue water, the layer of white, a layer of bubbly blue water and then a layer of wavy blue water. This gave me a depth that looks really nice and the appropriate blue color I wanted.<br /><br />The most difficult part of the process was gluing the layers together without causing any hazing or dis-coloring of the water effects plastic. This was ultimately accomplished with Model Masters Airplane Canopy Cement around the edges. It worked exactly as I wanted and caused absolutely no discoloration. I then ran a bead of clear RTV silicone around the edge to hold it in place inside the gate when it was popped in. I originally intended to use magnets but this proved nearly impossible and good old friction ended up being the better choice.<br /><br /><a href="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3151/2665687729_1d0f67431e_b.jpg"><img style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 400px; CURSOR: hand; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3151/2665687729_1d0f67431e.jpg" border="0" /></a><br /><br /><a href="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3010/2665680217_3a2c8af1f2_b.jpg"><img style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 400px; CURSOR: hand; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3010/2665680217_3a2c8af1f2.jpg" border="0" /></a><br /><br /><a href="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3099/2666514230_b4e14181d1_b.jpg"><img style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 400px; CURSOR: hand; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3099/2666514230_b4e14181d1.jpg" border="0" /></a><br /><br /><a href="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/2081/2666506610_a0fde60daf_b.jpg"><img style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 400px; CURSOR: hand; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/2081/2666506610_a0fde60daf.jpg" border="0" /></a><br /><br /><a href="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3206/2665685403_7348d15174_b.jpg"><img style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 400px; CURSOR: hand; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3206/2665685403_7348d15174.jpg" border="0" /></a><br />Now I just have to make a dial home device of somekind and I'll be set.Leidanghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05501171103402884493noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2978761034420654015.post-29798713370262229152008-07-14T14:00:00.001-07:002008-07-14T14:46:49.553-07:00SYW 15mm Closeups<div align="left">I received some requests for closeups of the SYW figs from the below battle report and I finally got a few taken this week. I had some major trouble trying to take closeups so they aren't quite as clear as I was hoping for but hopefully they will suffice.<br /><br />We'll start out with the Prussians and get to the Austrians further down the page. I generally use either 24 or 30 man battalions with a single battalion gun where appropriate. My figure scale is about 1:25. My figures are based so that I can use them for AOR if I need to, although I'm currently playing my own as yet untitled ruleset.<br /><br />My latest 2 projects for 15mm SYW involve getting plenty of battalion 4 lb guns painted up for the Prussians and Austrians and also painting up Von Kleist's Freikorps. After that I have a ton of painted Russians I need to rebase.<br /><br /><br /></div><div align="center"><br />The Prussians!<br /><br /></div><a href="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3162/2665643765_403984e247_b.jpg"><img style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 400px; CURSOR: hand; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3162/2665643765_403984e247.jpg" border="0" /></a><br /><br /><a href="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3046/2666470798_c62d55178a_b.jpg"><img style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 400px; CURSOR: hand; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3046/2666470798_c62d55178a.jpg" border="0" /></a><br /><br /><a href="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3132/2665605183_fbe7f73347_b.jpg"><img style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 400px; CURSOR: hand; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3132/2665605183_fbe7f73347.jpg" border="0" /></a><br /><br /><a href="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3209/2666429950_03198690ac_b.jpg"><img style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 400px; CURSOR: hand; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3209/2666429950_03198690ac.jpg" border="0" /></a><br /><br /><a href="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3054/2666439356_7793e05f16_b.jpg"><img style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 400px; CURSOR: hand; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3054/2666439356_7793e05f16.jpg" border="0" /></a><br /><br /><a href="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3122/2666440238_581b754e6f_b.jpg"><img style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 400px; CURSOR: hand; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3122/2666440238_581b754e6f.jpg" border="0" /></a><br /><br /><a href="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3087/2666443356_358b742a5f_b.jpg"><img style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 400px; CURSOR: hand; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3087/2666443356_358b742a5f.jpg" border="0" /></a><br /><br /><a href="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3163/2666471460_17240be372_b.jpg"><img style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 400px; CURSOR: hand; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3163/2666471460_17240be372.jpg" border="0" /></a><br /><br /><a href="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3139/2665609123_202ff8ffb5_b.jpg"><img style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 400px; CURSOR: hand; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3139/2665609123_202ff8ffb5.jpg" border="0" /></a><br /><br /><a href="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3280/2665612323_8856e06006_b.jpg"><img style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 400px; CURSOR: hand; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3280/2665612323_8856e06006.jpg" border="0" /></a><br /><div align="center"><br />The Austrians!<br /><br /></div><a href="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3080/2666446514_23ff485f31_b.jpg"><img style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 400px; CURSOR: hand; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3080/2666446514_23ff485f31.jpg" border="0" /></a><br /><br /><a href="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3059/2666449626_5f1b1a4ec4_b.jpg"><img style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 400px; CURSOR: hand; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3059/2666449626_5f1b1a4ec4.jpg" border="0" /></a><br /><br /><a href="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3155/2666452762_81bfcf3598_b.jpg"><img style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 400px; CURSOR: hand; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3155/2666452762_81bfcf3598.jpg" border="0" /></a><br /><br /><a href="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3126/2665631841_fbc5a7b19b_b.jpg"><img style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 400px; CURSOR: hand; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3126/2665631841_fbc5a7b19b.jpg" border="0" /></a><br /><br /><a href="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3224/2665634717_a8e2cd5001_b.jpg"><img style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 400px; CURSOR: hand; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3224/2665634717_a8e2cd5001.jpg" border="0" /></a><br /><br /><a href="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3223/2666464764_5fac36a655_b.jpg"><img style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 400px; CURSOR: hand; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3223/2666464764_5fac36a655.jpg" border="0" /></a><br /><br /><a href="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3026/2665637659_a36a4a6465_b.jpg"><img style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 400px; CURSOR: hand; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3026/2665637659_a36a4a6465.jpg" border="0" /></a><br /><br /><div align="left">That's about all for this post. Between the Prussians and the Austrians we had about 50 Infantry Battalions and about 25 Cavalry Battalions. All of the Infantry Battalions are either 24 or 30 man units. The table is 6' by 18' and it took us about 8 hours to play using my own house rules that I have been writing. We deployed on maps prior to actually placing our troops.<br /><br />The Prussian plan was to anchor our left flank on a small village and deploy both of our cavalry commands on the right flank. The Austrians had a very similar plan and ended up with both of their cavalry commands deployed facing ours. The Austrians ended up with the first move and got their Infantry Battalions in the center deployed first. This gave the Prussian center some difficulty as they came under fire prior to being fully deployed.<br /><br />However the Prussian Right and Left Flanks were faring much better at this point. The Left flank fully deployed and was awaiting the Austrian Right. The Austrians had not anticipated the refused flank and had a long march to bring their far right units to the fight. On the Prussian right the cavalry charged headlong into the Austrian Cavalry and a massive, whirling fight ensued. The Austrians were hampered in bringing the full weight of their Cavalry to bear by a small wood that cut their baseline. Ultimately this would prove critical on that flank and would end up turning the battle.<br /><br /><a href="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3084/2643382041_e6bf25490b_b.jpg"><img style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 400px; CURSOR: hand; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3084/2643382041_e6bf25490b.jpg" border="0" /></a><br /><br /><a href="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3171/2643400075_e7141945ee_b.jpg"><img style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 400px; CURSOR: hand; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3171/2643400075_e7141945ee.jpg" border="0" /></a><br /><br /><a href="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3029/2643379247_64c591068e_b.jpg"><img style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 400px; CURSOR: hand; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3029/2643379247_64c591068e.jpg" border="0" /></a><br /><br /></span><span style="font-family:arial;">The Initial Prussian cavalry charge eventually crushed the Austrian cavalry facing it. This was mostly due to very poor dice rolling by the Austrian Commander coupled with the Austrians inability to bring over half of their cavalry to bear due to the restrictive terrain (The woods in the above pic). However, much of the Prussian cavalry was left exhausted and the benefit of owning the flank could not immediately be exploited.<br /><br /><a href="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3102/2643393391_d7073efc9d_b.jpg"><img style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 400px; CURSOR: hand; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3102/2643393391_d7073efc9d.jpg" border="0" /></a><br /><br /><a href="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3101/2644204594_c2a8ee3dbc_b.jpg"><img style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 400px; CURSOR: hand; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3101/2644204594_c2a8ee3dbc.jpg" border="0" /></a><br /><br /></span><span style="font-family:arial;">Just down the line the Hungarians were doing their best to pepper the deploying Prussians. Despite the heavy losses and much confusion the Prussians eventually got deployed and a fierce firefight ensued.<br /><br /><a href="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3050/2644225226_835074dcd6_b.jpg"><img style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 400px; CURSOR: hand; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3050/2644225226_835074dcd6.jpg" border="0" /></a><br /><br /></span><span style="font-family:arial;">In center of the line Fredrick moved forward to press the attack. A long and deadly firefight ensued in which 2 Prussian battalions took over 50% casualties. Things were looking grim until the Prussian reserves joined the fight. At this point the Austrian center started to suffer from fatigue and it appeared that the Prussians were on the verge of a breakthrough.<br /><br /><a href="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3001/2644213104_af031c2642_b.jpg"><img style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 400px; CURSOR: hand; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3001/2644213104_af031c2642.jpg" border="0" /></a><br /><br /></span><p align="left"><span style="font-family:arial;">The fighting on the left flank was fierce with neither side giving an inch. After the initial Austrian deployment difficulties they had put a number of battalions into the fight but were unable to make any headway against the steadfast Prussian defense. The Prussian general holding the left flank did his job well holding up almost a third of the Austrian infantry and keeping them out of the decisive section of the battle.<br /><br /><a href="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3002/2644216076_6ff6c9d31f_b.jpg"><img style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 400px; CURSOR: hand; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3002/2644216076_6ff6c9d31f.jpg" border="0" /></a><br /><br /></span></p><p align="left"><span style="font-family:arial;">Meanwhile back on the right flank the Prussian infantry was finally starting to pressure the Hungarians just as the Prussian Cavalry was finally reorganized and recovered enough to exploit the flank.<br /><br /><a href="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3278/2643373743_f259cafe92_b.jpg"><img style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 400px; CURSOR: hand; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3278/2643373743_f259cafe92.jpg" border="0" /></a><br /><br /></span></p><p align="left"><span style="font-family:arial;">This proved to be a deadly combination as the engaged Hungarian infantry was unable to respond to a timely charge by a unit of Prussian Dragoons. The Austrian flank quickly collapsed as General Daun was sent from the field amidst the hoards of fleeing Hungarian Infantry.<br /><br /><a href="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3023/2643390603_70a07bcb01_b.jpg"><img style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 400px; CURSOR: hand; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3023/2643390603_70a07bcb01.jpg" border="0" /></a><br /><br /></span><span style="font-family:arial;">This development in conjunction with the wavering of the Austrian center made it obvious that the day belonged to the Prussians. In all it was a great day of gaming and we all had a good time pushing troops around the table.</span><br /><br /></p><p align="left"><span style="font-family:arial;"><strong>Note:</strong> The order counters in the pictures are from Litko Aerosystems.</span><span style="font-family:arial;"> </span><br /></p><strong></strong>Leidanghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05501171103402884493noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2978761034420654015.post-21359355754106079932008-05-04T09:25:00.000-07:002008-12-08T15:28:42.770-08:0028mm Stargate PicsAfter seeing some <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_0">Stargate</span> interest on <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_1">TMP</span> I thought I would post some pics of my 28mm <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_2">Stargate</span>. I can't take credit for any of the work or paint. I bought the S<span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_3">targate</span> as is off of E-Bay a year or so ago. The base was made to order for it by Battlefield Architect... a frequent poster in the <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_4">TMP</span> marketplace. I've bought a ton of his terrain and he always has a great product and provides excellent service.<br /><br />Anyway.. this proves that someone at sometime did make a Resin S<span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_5">targate</span>. It appears to be two halves put together back to back. The reverse side is identical except the chevrons were painted blue. I'm in the process of cutting some scenic effects plastic "water" sheeting to fit the opening to give the open gate look. I plan to mount it with tiny rare earth magnets so that I can pop it in and out.<br /><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjN2cAksPWkIaAgPIp8JFfJJyrl9dtnHP4ufUpMKc8OPDpZPMJaDpTCMD-GGV2KK7uQL43lACefK2iCopPPZwT7B7oY2VwUSCVCe5lxN8fA1hLBof5QZ0CYtpXE5SZ57nZuzCWflGjl2CHp/s1600-h/DSC00221.JPG"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5196560452369712674" style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; CURSOR: hand; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjN2cAksPWkIaAgPIp8JFfJJyrl9dtnHP4ufUpMKc8OPDpZPMJaDpTCMD-GGV2KK7uQL43lACefK2iCopPPZwT7B7oY2VwUSCVCe5lxN8fA1hLBof5QZ0CYtpXE5SZ57nZuzCWflGjl2CHp/s400/DSC00221.JPG" border="0" /></a> <div><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiM3K_vRPyjGeP1gLhrGsRlwvoOCEQm-sm5i2jHSCsHS5azSt5S_Y8v_pSgLcgMcDAWF15rwE0kghncj9Uf5OF8QZkd_QdxwcR-SfrFh1lsL3fbomhfTHLgBsfGIk3uwdqIrrwkxEy00Rdt/s1600-h/DSC00219.JPG"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5196560147427034642" style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; CURSOR: hand; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiM3K_vRPyjGeP1gLhrGsRlwvoOCEQm-sm5i2jHSCsHS5azSt5S_Y8v_pSgLcgMcDAWF15rwE0kghncj9Uf5OF8QZkd_QdxwcR-SfrFh1lsL3fbomhfTHLgBsfGIk3uwdqIrrwkxEy00Rdt/s400/DSC00219.JPG" border="0" /></a> <div><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh1TsN60jwt5zZcjhLAl6mjoosik6YOdyYUXhG4cPXluvB3aloTMUfBUlfRPFt9OnOwbNFy4nGkAmMQeDg09_91v73_8wDpoLsxXFWBfmtdnfM6X6fnqPI0sJyheKmvv929cFltaB1SUZvE/s1600-h/DSC00218.JPG"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5196559876844094978" style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; CURSOR: hand; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh1TsN60jwt5zZcjhLAl6mjoosik6YOdyYUXhG4cPXluvB3aloTMUfBUlfRPFt9OnOwbNFy4nGkAmMQeDg09_91v73_8wDpoLsxXFWBfmtdnfM6X6fnqPI0sJyheKmvv929cFltaB1SUZvE/s400/DSC00218.JPG" border="0" /></a> <img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5196560684297946674" style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; CURSOR: hand; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiNOMgWkqXomDxhQ96TxF1lmQhnVMuh6-wKRxXvI_cMj6loVBmOrDRHRF-3muoZrLVo6NVNBHaY1OGtnF9bZO89JmgNgNVrDtkMV_IZ6f4GEpCVXH1FGJmzyDyTRKk4_2bH0LL5F5YKKtqu/s400/DSC00222.JPG" border="0" /><br /><br /><div></div></div></div>Leidanghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05501171103402884493noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2978761034420654015.post-17989677618443892842008-04-29T18:03:00.001-07:002008-04-29T18:18:58.945-07:0015mm Zulu & Brit PicsBy request I have taken some closeup photos of my 15mm figs from the Isandlawana game in the previous post. It took about 9 months to put together including building terrain, coming up with rules, and acquiring and/or painting the figures. The Zulus are represented at a scale of about 1:20 and the Brits at about 1:10. The Brits just didn't look right at 1:20 and the thought of painting up another 1300 Zulu's to do them at 1:10 was a little daunting so I ended up compromising and taking the difference into account in the fire and combat charts.<br /><div align="center"><div align="left"><br />The board was constructed out of sheets of insulation foam and coated with Durham's water putty. I've since switched to a product called F<span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_2">lexcoat</span> for this. Durham's becomes quite brittle once dry and I had <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_3">a lot</span> of problems with chipping. A friend of mine suggested <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_4">Flexcoat</span> and it works very well and does not suffer the brittleness issue. The board is 6' x 12' and I arrived at the size need by using the historical British battle line as a guide and scaling the board to the size needed for my British units to cover the same frontage. </div><div align="left"></div><div align="left"></div><div align="left"> </div><div align="left">For Rules I used a homegrown variant of Fire & Fury.
